FAQ 10
What involvement do 12-step programs
have in the treatment process?
Each treatment facility operates
on different principles and treatment philosophies;
therefore involvement in 12-step programs is decided
on an individual basis. Many treatment centers choose
to either adhere to or draw resources from 12-step programs
because 12-step programs are widely recognized as a
useful tool in recovery. Some programs may take their
patients through the 12 steps in the form of workbooks
and individual counseling sessions, while other facilities
may utilize the full spectrum of the 12-step program
by emphasizing the use of meetings and support group
activities.
Using the 12-step program has been
effective both in and out of the treatment process because
it is a useful transition tool and a way of life that
strongly believes in abstinence from all mind-altering
substances. In addition the 12-step philosophy does
not see itself as having a monopoly on recovery and
does not force people to believe or do anything.
At National Rehab we emphasize the
useful nature of the 12-step process as a supplementary
tool to maintain a recovery lifestyle. Like many other
facilities we suggest that patients who are committed
to staying sober find out more about 12-step programs
in their area once they have left our program. We believe
the 12-step process to be of complimentary value to
our treatment program and hope that our patients are
able to find hope in its suggestions.
