FAQ 7

Does treatment really work?

Yes, in many cases treatment really does work. While treatment is not a surefire way to keep someone from going back to his/her addiction, understanding addiction and the problems that it causes are essential tools to combat it. Some people who go through rehab do relapse and require additional treatment, however others are able to use the tools they have gained and find support through 12-step programs and other sources of outside help.

12-step programs are suggested as a way to maintain sobriety because they keep the ex-users in touch with the way that their lives used to be and help them focus on how sobriety is benefiting their lives. The compassion and understanding that recovering people feel amongst each other is often incomparable to anything they have every felt. Treatment addresses deeply rooted issues that may have never been discussed or examined before and the process helps individuals to deal with problems and feelings that have caused them to use in the past.
